Difference between 좀 주세요 and 주세요

Do you know the difference between '좀 주세요 jom juseyo' and '주세요 juseyo'? 'juseyo' is an expression of asking for something in order to get it. Let's find out what the difference is between an expression in which 'jom' is added before 'juseyo' and one without.

juseyo-vs-jom-juseyo

◼︎◼︎◼︎ Used to emphasize a noun

Let's consider the following example : Conversation between Jisoo and Cheolmin. Jisoo and Cheol-min are dating at the park, and he wants to go to the public restroom in the park.

Cheol-min [나 화장실 다녀올게]
Jisoo [그래 다녀와

If '좀' is added after the noun '화장실'. it is emphasized. Cheol-min emphasizes to Jisoo that he wants to go to the bathroom. Here's another sentence.

[김치  주세요

When you ask the waiter for more kimchi side dishes at a restaurant, it is more appealing to say '김치  주세요' rather then '김치 주세요'. '좀' emphasizes the noun, making it clear to the other person what you want to do or ask for.

◼︎◼︎◼︎ Priority of wants

The example in the paragraph above also means that Cheol-min wants to go to the bathroom as a priority. Going to the bathroom is the first thing he wants to do for Cheol-min. Here is another sentence. Both expression are commonly used in Korea.

[술  끊고 싶어요] '좀' after a noun '술'
[술 그만  마시고 싶어요] '좀' after a adverb '그만'

If someone says, "술 좀 끊고 싶어요", you can tell that he considers quitting alcohol his most urgent matter. and he wants to quit '술 alcohol' itself.

In the second sentence, '좀' is added after the adverb '그만', How can you understand this case? It's simple, the adverb '그만' is emphasized. In other words, he emphasizes that he wants to quit.

◼︎◼︎◼︎ In the command sentence, '좀' means a little

[ 더 앞으로가]

In the case of words that start with '좀', '더' is often added after '좀' which means little. In the above sentence, '더 = more' is added after '좀 = little'. When '더' is added after '좀', it can be interpreted as a little more. It is also '좀 = 조금' The abbreviation for a '조금' is '좀'

* 좀 더 = little more
