Films based on Korean traditional culture

Let's get to know Korean traditional culture through Korean movies. 



1. Shamanistic Culture in 'The wailing'

This movie is a horror film that takes Korean folk beliefs and shaman customs as the subject matter. Since ancient times, Korean shamans have danced and wielded swords to cast out evil spirits and ghosts that make people sick. The Korean name for the movie is 'Gokseong'. The filming location is Gokseong-gun, Jeollanam-do. this is the local name of Korea. while the shamanic culture of Korea is gradually being destroyed, many Koreans have started to take interest in Korean shamans since the movie was released. In fact, the appearance of the shaman in the movie and the real shaman are very different. After watching the movie, you may be interested in the indigenous Korean beliefs and shamanic culture.


2. Fortune teller Culture in 'The face reader'

The main character of this movie is a fortune teller who predicts the future by looking at the shape of a person's face. The background is the Joseon Dynasty(1392-1897), a country in the past of Korea. The protagonist looks at people's faces and predicts their future. There are still many fortune tellers in Korea. because Korean ancestors had a high priesthood when they lived in the ancient countries of Eurasia and Central Asia. 3. Traditional play Culture in 'King and the crown' 

This movie is also set in the Joseon Dynasty. The main characters played clowns. Thy try to make the king laugh by playing tightrope and mask games. But as the king spends more time with them, the queen becomes jealous. One of the clowns looks as pretty as a woman, so the king feels affection. At the time of the film's release, the subject of homosexuality created a negative public opinion among the audience. Nevertheless, the film was a box office success. After that, the handsome boy trend began to spread in Korea. 


4. A custom that believes in a land with good energy in the 'Feng Shui'

It is a story about people who have a belief that if they build a house on a land that exudes good energy, things will go well for their family, and that if they use it as a cemetery, their descendants will become famous or wealthy. This system of thought and belief is called 'feng shui geography'. In other word, it is the story of a fortune teller who predicts the future of people living with land. The king and the nobles fight bloodily to get the good land fortune teller says. Even today, some people believe in the geography of feng shui and buy land to build a house or to bury themselves under it when they die. 


5. 'Heo Jun' a drama about oriental medicine culture

Finally, I would like to introduce you to the drama 'Heo Jun' Heo Jun is a doctor who is good at acupuncture. He was registered with Korea's Great People and was a real person. He compiled a medical book called 'Donguibogam' He wrote about how to treat people through herbs and acupuncture. Based on this, there are many oriental medicine hospital in Korea. The oriental medicine hospital studies the structure of the human body and the role relationship of organs, and provides treatment methods and improvement measures according to the constitution of various humans
